One year in red-white-red

It’s been now three weeks since I became national champion on the road, but I still keep telling my girlfriend that it doesn’t feel real. To represent your nation at all races worldwide is undoubtfully a dream of every pro cyclist. On 25th of June 2017 this dream came to for me.

My two mates and very close friends Pösti (Lukas Pöstlberger) and Koni (Patrick Konrad) sacrificed their owned chances to support and help me. Their selfless riding made it achievable, that I now have the privilege of wearing the national jersey on my back for the year. Right after the start of the race Pösti made it into the breakaway which made our lives back in the peloton a bit easier. Patrick took great care of me in the bunch and tried to protect me from the wind. As we got informed from our director Christian Pömer via radio that Lukas needed some help, Patrick started to close down the gap to the breakaway. After an amazing effort it was my turn to make the bridge to the two in front on the last long climb.

Together with Michael Gogl (Trek Segafredo) did we have a three-men lead. It was a tactical game to distance Michael from us. Lukas forced the decisive attack and Gogl couldn’t close the gap. Via radio Christian told me to counterattack and bring down the gap to Lukas. We managed to increase our lead over 2 minutes. Some kilometers away from the finish line our director said that we are free to go for the national title. The win of this jersey is the result of hard work, freaking strong teamwork and the best support from BORA-hansgrohe. As I already said in the interview after the race, I would love to split the jersey into three parts 😉

Here is a video from Tini und Andy (geradeaus.at) – THANK YOU!!!

After the nationals I had a little break to refuel my energy for the second part of the season. We spent a few days in Kitzbühel  accommodated at the hotel Jodlbühel, run by family Reisch. There I was finally able to eat the best quark pancakes after not having them for some time 😉 Right after that we went to the Sporthotel Hochlienz in Osttirol, where I slowly returned to my daily training routine before the whole team followed a week later.

I start my second racing block with a kick-off Criterium in Wels, a race which I love because of all the spectators. Come watch us racing on Wednesday, July 26th at the downtown of Wels. After that I continue my program at the Tour of Poland, which belongs to the World Tour Series.

Cheers,
Gregor
